Cooler weather has arrived. We had our first few freezes and all we have are the plants that do well in the cold.(we still covered it) We planted quite a few Asian Greens and some Chinese Cabbage. We like to try unusual varieties. If you are going through the effort of growing it you might as well have a little fun. The Asian Greens that we planted are Michihili,(which is a type of cabbage but looks and tastes like a lettuce) and Mizuna. So far I have only eaten these raw, but they are really good. The Mizuna is like Arugula, but not quite as spicy. My kids will eat the Michihili right out of the garden. We also planted Mei Quin Choy which is a smaller version of Bok Choy. It is quite bitter raw, but I found some great soup recipes as well as some stir-fry ideas. Check out What's Cooking at the top of the page to see how to use these vegetables.
We also planted a couple of kinds of red lettuce, some red kale, and some red cabbage. This will be our red bed.......once it gets bigger.
We also have beets, carrots, and Swiss Chard planted. (Loved our Swiss Chard we had in the spring and it loves the cooler weather so hopefully it will last a long time)
We are getting ready to plant another row of greens, but aren't quite sure what we varieties yet. Tomorrow I will take close up pictures of the greens that are ready and post pictures and prices. A fresh green salad would be a great addition to your Thanksgiving meal.
If anyone has something they really like put in a request. We will be more than happy to try growing it.
