We have been having a lot of fun around here lately. Here are a few things we've been doing.......
We planted Elbon Rye a while back in our chicken pasture. It's starting to come up good. We have it divided into two areas so we can rotate them and keep it from being overgrazed.
Speaking of chickens, Bodie had his first chicken show with his 4-h group.
It involved a bubble bath, which contrary to popular belief, his chicken thoroughly enjoyed.
And a blow dry....although her crazy feathers is just her breed.
Repeat, repeat, repeat.........
We have removable row covers so we can cover them if it gets too cold.
A look at the row covers. We use rebar and our hoops fit right over the rebar. Then we pull our cloth over the top. We use an Agribon 10x50 row cover. It is breathable. Sunlight and water get through, but it protects from bugs when we have seedlings coming up or freezing weather.
We grow some things from seeds. We saved seed from plants that we enjoyed this year. We also buy transplants from http://www.gabrielvalleyfarms.com/ The plants they grow are grown organically, are varieties that grow well here, and they have a lot of choices that are fun. Here's a new type of lettuce we just purchased......
It's called Speckled Trout Back.......you can see why. We try new things and see how they grow. If they grow well and taste good, we will keep seed or buy more.
This weekend we planted 50 plants, which included two types of lettuce, beets, radicchio, leeks, and oregano. We add that to what we already have.....Brussel sprouts, several varieties of Asian greens, along with carrots and more beets grown from seed.
We are looking forward to seeing how well they grow through our Texas winter.
