So much good stuff has been happening and I have been horrible at keeping up. It's been hot and dry for a long time now so not much has been going on in the garden.
What's Been Happening Lately.....
We finally planted several things a few weeks ago. Some we sowed directly, and some we planted in pots and put under the grow light. We tried to put in the ground only things we knew could handle the Texas heat.
The Swiss Chard came up and is doing wonderfully.( I really love Swiss Chard) We also planted some heat loving Spinach. It has grown much slower than the Swiss Chard, but is finally starting to look good. I planted carrots and although they came up quickly, the grasshoppers are still active now and have done some damage. We are going to wait until it starts getting a bit cooler at night and try again. I am excited about our carrots because we planted purple, orange, and yellow varieties.

We have also planted several types of sweet peas, kale, beets, and cauliflower. We have lettuce and Mizuna inside under grow lights. Once we get some more cooler weather we have lots of fun stuff to plant.
We got meat chickens again this year. Last year we had 25. This year we went with 50. We like the Freedom Rangers because they don't grow as fast as the white broilers. Meat breeds already grow fast and we wanted to avoid any leg problems or other injuries that happen frequently with the faster growing breeds.
We also went to our first farming conference this year. It was a two day seminar with various speakers covering topics about organic gardening, laws being passed that help or hurt farmers, some great info on GMOs, bees, and several topics for young or new farmers. It was all very informative. The highlight for us was the farm to table meal that we had at Ronin Cooking. Everything on the menu was from local farmers, grown organically, and served in a beautiful setting.
What's happening soon.....
Soon we will be hitting the farmer's markets again. We will be attending chicken shows again. We will have lots of good stuff growing in our garden. We will be planting more grass for our laying hens pasture. We will be making good food and sharing recipes. We will be posting lots of obnoxious pictures. Stay tuned.....
