It doesn't take long for the bugs to find your garden, especially right now while there is very little green to eat. When I was watering the plants today I noticed that some of my lettuce is looking a bit wilted. Then I started noticing some little green things hopping off the plants when the water hit them. On closer inspection I discovered that they were leaf hoppers. If you don't know what these are, they are kind of like a grasshopper only on a much smaller scale. On top of that I discovered a colorado potato beetle. Plus, I also saw some spotted cucumber beetles. If you have ever had these before they aren't good, they eat the leaves, the blooms, pretty much anything they can get their mouths on. So, the bugs are looking for food and since we are too,the battle is on.
This is one of the things we use to fight off the bugs. We use organic products in our garden. I don't want to ever worry if my kids want to pick something off of a plant and pop it in their mouth. Half the fun of gardening is being able to eat the food and my kids love it.
Here is an example......When I mixed up the spray my three year old wanted to help me spray the plants. I don't have to tell her no because it safe. She can spray until her little fingers get tired and then mama will take over.
We also use diatomaceous earth for our plants. This is something we have used for years and it works great, especially on pill bugs which can totally destroy your plants if you have them in abundance. It's still early in the year and the bugs aren't out in full force yet so I'll post more things we use for pest control as it comes up.
